Ridge Meadows Flames shutout Kimberley Dynamiters 7-0 in Mowat Cup game 2

In their first game of the Mowat Cup on Thursday, Apr. 18, the Kimberley Dynamiters were shutout 7-0 by the Ridge Meadows Flames.

All four teams took to the ice ahead of the game in an opening ceremony led by the Kimberley Pipe Band and addressed by Kimberley Mayor Don McCormick.

The game got off to a relatively slow start as the two teams sized each other up. While there were some big hits on both ends, the first period was penalty free, which is more than can be said about the rest of the game.

Theo Kochan slipped one into the corner of the net five minutes into the first to open the scoring, the first of the Flames’ seven goals.

Despite outshooting their opponent, the Dynamiters just couldn’t get anything going. The second period was an onslaught of goals from the Flames, with Lachlan Freer, Ecan Fedele, Jack Foster and Jacob Roche each getting one.

The Dynamiters successfully killed their one penalty of the second, but were unable to capitalize on any of their power plays, including a five-on-three following a nasty cross check from Tyler Blatz.

Jack Foster would pot his second of the night and Nolan Bowsher would make it 7-0 in the final five minutes of the game. Flames’ goalie Vaughn Kaliel was unbeatable, stopping all 31 of Kimberley’s shots on goal.

Friday will see the Flames take on the Revelstoke Grizzlies, who beat the Saanich Predators 7-4 in the first game of the tournament, at 1 p.m. on Friday. The Dynamiters will play the Predators at 7 p.m. and look for some redemption following a lackluster performance in game one.
